Tygart Valley River Rail Trail Technical Extension

Railroad grade meets mine subsidence chaos

Difficult

What started as the Tygart Valley Rail Trail’s peaceful railbed transforms into something entirely different where the pavement ends near Philippi. The 12-mile technical extension follows the abandoned Baltimore & Ohio grade through active mine subsidence areas, where the earth still settles decades after deep mining operations ceased. Massive concrete foundations from the old Nestorville Coal Company tipple rise from Tygart Lake like industrial tombstones, while the trail navigates around sinkholes that can swallow a truck tire without warning.

This difficult route requires experienced drivers in modified 4WDs with skid plates and recovery gear. The rail grade’s deceptively gentle gradient masks serious hazards: washouts from mine drainage, soft spots over old underground workings, and seasonal flooding that can strand vehicles for days. Best attempted during late summer dry spells when water levels drop. No official permits, but notify Barbour County Sheriff of your plans — cell service dies completely past mile 4, and the coal company security patrols don’t appreciate uninvited guests near active operations.
