Old Woman Mountains Wilderness

Point of Interest

This 12,000-acre wilderness area preserves a dramatic granite mountain landscape dotted with ancient pictograph sites and abandoned mining claims from the early 1900s. The terrain is classic Mojave high desert with Joshua trees, barrel cacti, and seasonal wildflower displays. Several old mining roads provide access to petroglyphs and ruins, though most require high-clearance vehicles and careful navigation.

Access via Essex Road or several rough tracks from Historic Route 66. Most pictograph sites require 2-4 mile hikes from vehicle access points. No developed facilities or signage — this is true wilderness. GPS and topographic maps essential for navigation. Spring wildflower season (March-April) offers the most rewarding visits when temperatures are moderate.
