Blackwater Falls State Forest Timber Loop

Working forest technical loop near Raleigh

Moderate

The Blackwater Falls State Forest Timber Loop cuts through 3,200 acres of working forest where logging trucks and weekend warriors share muddy two-tracks between the Neuse and Tar river watersheds. This 12-mile network of interconnected forest service roads follows old tobacco field boundaries and timber harvesting routes, with the highlight being a technical creek crossing at Blackwater Falls where granite ledges create a natural stair-step descent. The route connects three primitive camping areas and passes through both hardwood bottomland and pine plantation sections that showcase North Carolina’s forest management practices.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and muddy sections after rain. The timber roads can be rough with deep ruts during logging operations, and several water crossings become impassable during spring floods. Best tackled April through October when roads dry out, though fall offers the best foliage. No permits required, but check with Wake County Forest Service for active logging schedules. Dispersed camping allowed at designated sites, and the route provides a solid introduction to North Carolina’s working forest backcountry within an hour of Raleigh.
