Flattop Mountain Trail

CCC fire tower road to Blue Ridge summit views

Moderate

This forgotten fire tower road climbs 2,000 feet through Doughton Park’s backcountry to one of the Blue Ridge’s best-kept scenic secrets. Built in the 1930s by the CCC, the route starts as smooth gravel but deteriorates into a rocky, rutted climb that punishes soft suspensions and low-hanging exhaust. The payoff comes at mile 6 where the old fire tower foundation offers 360-degree views across the Blue Ridge escarpment into Virginia and Tennessee. On clear days, you can see Mount Rogers 50 miles north.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the final 3 miles of loose rock and washouts. Best accessed April through November when gates aren’t locked for winter. No permits required, but this is National Park Service land so camping isn’t allowed along the route. Bring water and fuel – nearest services are 45 minutes away in Sparta. The climb tests your rig, but the views from Flattop’s summit justify every jarring mile through some of the most remote country on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
