Capitol Reef National Park Cohab Canyon Trailhead
Cohab Canyon offers one of Capitol Reef’s best short slot canyon experiences, starting right from the Fruita Historic District. The trail winds through a narrow canyon carved into Wingate Sandstone, passing hidden alcoves where polygamist families allegedly hid from federal marshals in the 1880s. The 3.4-mile round trip hike features towering red walls, natural bridges, and connects to Grand Wash for longer adventures.
Trailhead parking fills quickly during peak season (March-October), with best access in early morning. The wash can flash flood during storms — check weather before heading out. No facilities at the trailhead itself, but Fruita campground and visitor center are within walking distance.
