Sweetwater Creek State Park
Sweetwater Creek State Park sits on 2,549 acres of rolling hills and creek bottom land west of Atlanta. The campground offers 25 sites with water and electric hookups, plus restrooms and showers. Mill ruins from the 1800s sit along the creek, and several hiking trails connect the area. It’s popular with weekend warriors but quieter midweek.
The park serves as a solid base camp for overlanders hitting the northern Georgia trails around Dahlonega and Blue Ridge. Creek access provides water for washing gear, and the proximity to I-20 makes resupply runs easy. Reservations recommended for weekends and fall color season.
