Sumter National Forest Oconee Station Military Road
Revolutionary War military road through Cherokee country
This forgotten military road cuts through the heart of Cherokee country where Revolutionary War soldiers once marched between frontier outposts. The route follows old wagon ruts and military traces from Oconee Station State Historic Site through dense hardwood forests, crossing Station Creek multiple times before climbing toward Tamassee Knob. You’ll pass crumbling stone foundations of burned homesteads and remnants of the original Cherokee Path that predates European settlement by centuries.
Moderate difficulty with several rocky creek crossings that can flood during heavy rains. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance handles it fine, but low-slung vehicles will scrape on the embedded rocks. Best tackled April through October when water levels stay reasonable. No permits needed, but respect the historic sites — this is sacred Cherokee territory. Spring brings wildflowers and fall delivers spectacular colors through the canopy. The payoff is stepping back 200 years into frontier history most folks never see.
