Sumter National Forest Brass Town Creek Technical Loop

This technical loop follows old Cherokee gold mining traces along Brass Town Creek, where water has carved channels through solid granite and left truck-sized boulders scattered like dice. The route demands careful line choice as you navigate wet rock faces, off-camber creek crossings, and granite shelf roads barely wider than your vehicle. Historic mine shafts and equipment ruins dot the landscape—remnants of 1800s gold fever that brought the first roads into these remote hollows.

Expert-level difficulty requiring full 4WD with low-range, diff locks, and rock sliders minimum. Underbody protection essential—the granite here has sharp edges and zero forgiveness. Water levels change rapidly; check conditions before attempting creek sections. No permits needed but inform someone of your plans—this is genuine backcountry where a breakdown means a long walk.
