Webb Wildlife Center Management Road Network
Gated ACE Basin preserve with historic rice fields
Webb Wildlife Center’s 8,000-acre management road system winds through the heart of South Carolina’s ACE Basin, where antebellum rice plantation dikes create a maze of flooded impoundments teeming with alligators and wading birds. These gated timber roads, originally built for forest management, now provide exclusive access to some of the state’s most pristine wetland habitat, including the historic Ashepoo River rice fields and remnants of the old Charleston-Savannah stagecoach route.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though seasonal flooding can create challenging conditions during summer months. Access requires advance permission from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Best visited October through April when water levels are lower and mosquito populations manageable. Multiple primitive camping areas available along the route. Bring bug spray, plenty of water, and expect spotty cell coverage in this remote corner of the Lowcountry.
