Catskill Park Beaverkill State Campground Fire Road Network

Classic Catskill trout country fire road adventure

Moderate

The Beaverkill fire road network winds through some of the Catskills’ most legendary trout country, accessing remote sections of the Willowemoc and Beaverkill creeks that shaped American fly fishing history. These old Department of Environmental Conservation maintenance roads connect a web of abandoned settlements from the 1800s, including the remains of the Flugertown hamlet and several tannery sites. The main spine follows an old logging railroad grade, passing through dense hemlock groves and crossing multiple creek tributaries on deteriorating wooden bridges. The most challenging section climbs toward Mongaup Mountain, where rocky switchbacks and seasonal washouts test traction and clearance.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles with 4WD engagement for wet conditions and steep grades. Spring runoff (March-May) can make creek crossings dangerous. Prime season runs June through October when roads are driest and fishing is productive. No permits required but respect private property boundaries marked with orange blazes. Fuel up in Roscoe – the nearest services once you’re committed to the network. This route delivers access to some of the East Coast’s premier wild trout fishing and secluded camping spots that most anglers never see.
