Finger Lakes Trail Watkins Glen Gorge Rim Circuit
Gorge rim circuit with quarry ruins and lake views
This circuit follows old quarry roads that wind along the rim of Watkins Glen State Park, offering spectacular views into the 400-foot-deep gorge that made this area famous. The route passes through abandoned stone quarry sites where crews blasted limestone in the early 1900s, with rusted equipment still visible in the undergrowth. Key waypoints include Lover’s Lane Overlook and the old quarry master’s house foundation at mile 8, where the trail splits toward Seneca Lake’s western shore.
An easy to moderate route suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though some sections get muddy in spring and after storms. The stone surfaces can be slippery when wet, and a few steep grades require steady throttle control. Best explored April through November when gates are open. No permits required, but parking fills up fast during fall foliage season. Several primitive camping spots exist along the circuit, but most folks prefer the established campgrounds in nearby Watkins Glen State Park.
