Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Alamo Canyon Campground
Alamo Canyon Campground sits at the end of the 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive, one of the most challenging roads in the National Park System. This primitive campground offers 4 designated sites in a narrow desert canyon surrounded by towering saguaro and organ pipe cacti. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, but no water or toilets — pack everything in. The setting is incredibly remote and pristine, with excellent stargazing and desert wildlife viewing.
The access road is rough, rocky, and requires high-clearance 4WD with good ground clearance. Several steep climbs, sharp turns, and wash crossings make this unsuitable for anything but capable 4WD vehicles. Allow 3-4 hours for the drive each way. Road may be impassable after heavy rains. Open year-round but brutally hot in summer — best visited October through April.
