Cahaba River Sand Hills Recreation Loop
Ancient sand dunes meet Alabama's cleanest river
The Cahaba River Sand Hills Recreation Loop cuts through some of Alabama’s rarest terrain — ancient sand dunes left behind when this was all ocean floor millions of years ago. This 12-mile circuit follows old logging roads and wildlife management tracks along the Cahaba River’s eastern banks, where towering longleaf pines grow straight from sugar-white sand that’ll bog down anything without momentum. The highlight comes at Hargrove Shoals, where you can air down and run the sandbar crossings during low water.
This is moderate terrain that rewards smooth throttle control over brute force — think more Outer Banks than Moab. High-clearance 4WD recommended but not always necessary outside the deep sand sections. Summer’s brutal hot and buggy; spring and fall offer the best conditions when river levels are predictable. No permits needed, but respect the private property boundaries that checker this area. Perfect for families wanting to introduce kids to real adventure without the pucker factor.
