Talladega National Forest Forest Road 511 Tallassee Creek Iron Ore Technical Loop
Civil War iron mining roads through technical rock gardens.
Forest Road 511 traces the old iron ore wagon routes that fed Confederate furnaces during the Civil War, winding up Tallassee Creek through a gauntlet of mine pits and slag heaps now reclaimed by mountain laurel and rhododendron. The trail kicks off easy enough through second-growth hardwoods, but quickly turns nasty at Devil’s Backbone Ridge where massive sandstone boulders create a natural obstacle course. Tallassee Creek itself becomes your roadway for nearly a mile, with the ruins of Irondale Furnace marking the halfway point where miners once hauled red ore by mule train.
This is genuine difficult terrain that’ll punish stock rigs – expect body damage, scraped skids, and at least one pucker moment navigating the “Iron Gates” boulder field. Bring 33-inch tires minimum, armor plating, and a winch you’re not afraid to use. Spring flooding makes creek crossings dangerous; late summer through fall offers the best conditions. No permits needed but fuel up in Sylacauga – you’re 40 miles from the nearest gas station. Camp along the creek for star-filled nights where only the owls and your cooling engine break the silence.
