Conecuh National Forest Open Pond Fire Tower Road

The Open Pond Fire Tower Road penetrates deep into the Conecuh National Forest’s longleaf pine ecosystem, where controlled burns maintain an otherworldly landscape of grass-floored pine cathedral and cypress-ringed black water ponds. This old Forest Service road leads to a decommissioned fire tower overlooking the vast Green Swamp, following sandy two-tracks that become axle-deep sugar sand in dry conditions and bottomless mud during Alabama’s notorious summer thunderstorm season. The route passes several named ponds including Alligator Pond, where locals still pull trophy bass and the occasional gator sunbathes on cypress logs.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather—the sugar sand demands momentum and proper tire pressure, while wet sections require patience and steady throttle. High-clearance 2WD can handle dry conditions, but 4WD becomes essential when rain turns the clay underlayment slick. Best visited fall through spring when humidity drops and biting insects retreat. No permits needed, but this is serious backcountry with limited cell service and few exit options. The reward: some of Alabama’s most pristine wilderness and excellent stargazing from the old tower site.
