Sumter National Forest Table Rock Fire Tower Road

CCC fire tower road with granite attitude

Difficult

This forgotten fire tower access road winds 3.2 miles up Table Rock Mountain’s north face, following a Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps route that’s seen better days. The trail starts innocuously near Devil’s Kitchen at the base of the Blue Wall, but quickly turns technical as it climbs through second-growth hardwoods via a series of granite shelves and loose shale switchbacks. The real test comes at mile 2.1 where Wildcat Creek has carved a deep ravine requiring a committed rock crawl descent and climb-out that’ll test your differential locks.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery points. Late fall through early spring offers the best traction and visibility, though ice can make the granite sections treacherous. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is limited to designated spots near the tower clearing. The payoff is worth the punishment — 360-degree views stretching from Caesar’s Head to the Chattooga River gorge, plus you’ll have bragging rights on one of the Upstate’s most technical tower roads.
