Lynches River State Park Boundary Road Technical Circuit
CCC legacy trail through longleaf restoration
The Boundary Road Circuit follows old CCC-era fire breaks through Lynches River State Park’s backcountry restoration zones, where 90-year-old longleaf pines survived the great timber boom and now anchor 800 acres of native ecosystem recovery. The trail climbs steep sand ridges overlooking the Lynches River valley, with technical descents into creek bottoms that test suspension travel and driver finesse. Turkey Oak Hill offers the toughest climb — a 200-foot sand and clay ascent that separates pretenders from the real deal, especially after rain when clay becomes slick as ice.
Moderate to difficult rating, requiring 4WD with aggressive tread and recovery points. Park gates lock at sunset, so day trips only unless you’ve arranged overnight permits with park staff. Spring through fall offers best conditions, though summer heat in the sand can be punishing. State park entry fee required. What you make here: legitimate technical driving skills on terrain that’ll prepare you for bigger adventures, plus access to some of the finest longleaf pine habitat restoration happening in the Southeast where red-cockaded woodpeckers still nest.
