Ocmulgee River Sand Hills Heritage Trail

Longleaf pine ecosystem with naval stores history.

Easy

The Ocmulgee River Sand Hills stretch across central Georgia’s coastal plain, where deep sand roads wind through some of the state’s last intact longleaf pine forests. This 23-mile network connects historic turpentine camps and wire grass prairies via sandy two-tracks that challenge traction more than ground clearance. The route passes preserved naval stores operations where workers once carved faces into virgin pines, collecting resin for shipbuilding. Sand gets deep enough in places to require momentum and proper tire pressure, but the real reward is experiencing an ecosystem that once covered 90 million acres across the Southeast.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather — dry sand provides good traction, but rain turns these roads into quagmires. Any stock 4WD handles it fine when conditions are right, but bring a shovel and lower tire pressure to 15-18 PSI for better flotation. Spring brings incredible wildflower displays, while fall hunting season may restrict access to some areas. Multiple primitive camping spots available along the river bluffs. This trail offers accessible adventure with genuine historical and ecological significance — perfect for families wanting to explore Georgia’s natural heritage without technical rock crawling.
