Ridge and Valley Scenic Byway Dirt Extension

The paved Ridge and Valley Scenic Byway barely hints at what lies beyond the asphalt — a network of dirt and gravel farm roads threading between Johns Mountain and Horn Mountain through valleys carved by Little River. These forgotten routes were the original wagon roads connecting isolated homesteads, and they still wind past century-old barns, limestone springs, and creek crossings where Model T’s once forded. The main dirt extension follows old Highway 27 for twelve miles, connecting with forest service roads that climb the ridges for commanding valley views.

Easy trail suitable for stock vehicles with decent ground clearance, though wet weather can make the clay-based roads slick as ice. Summer brings thick vegetation that’ll stripe your paint, while winter offers clearer sight lines and fewer bugs. No permits required on public roads, and several spots offer legal dispersed camping on national forest land. Carry extra water since natural sources need treatment. It’s a mellow introduction to Georgia backroading with enough history and scenery to justify the dust.
