Forest Road 180 Jack’s River Fields
Wilderness gateway to forgotten homesteads
Forest Road 180 drops into the Jack’s River watershed through some of the most remote country in North Georgia’s Cohutta Wilderness area. The route follows an old homestead road that served scattered mountain families until the 1930s, passing stone chimney ruins and terraced fields slowly being reclaimed by forest. Technical sections include three ford crossings of Jack’s River tributaries and a steep descent through Rough Ridge Gap where washouts regularly challenge even experienced drivers.
This is legitimate backcountry requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Best tackled in dry conditions between late spring and early fall when creek levels are manageable. No permits required but inform someone of your route – cell service vanishes at the wilderness boundary. The payoff is solitude in some of Georgia’s wildest country, with opportunities for dispersed camping along old homestead clearings if you respect Leave No Trace principles.
