Valley of Fire State Park Fire Wave
The Fire Wave is a mesmerizing geological formation within Valley of Fire State Park, featuring layered red and white Aztec sandstone that ripples like frozen flames. This iconic formation sits about a half-mile hike from the Fire Wave parking area off Mouse’s Tank Road, making it accessible to most visitors but requiring a short desert walk across slickrock terrain.
Best photographed in early morning or late afternoon when the low-angle light enhances the wave patterns in the rock. The formation can get crowded during peak season (October through April), so arrive early for solitude. No shade available at the site — bring water and sun protection for the exposed hike across open desert.
