Duck River Highland Rim Technical Circuit

The Highland Rim’s karst limestone creates a natural obstacle course where underground rivers carve caves and sinkholes dot the landscape like artillery craters. This circuit explores the Duck River’s remote upper reaches through Maury County, where Civil War cavalry once watered horses at hidden springs. The route follows old logging roads past Cascade Falls — a 25-foot waterfall that disappears into underground caverns — before climbing limestone bluffs honeycombed with unexplored caves and solution holes.

Easy to moderate difficulty with occasional technical limestone ledges that demand momentum and tire placement. Any stock 4WD can handle dry conditions, but spring rains turn limestone dust into slick clay that’ll send you sideways. Best seasons are late summer through fall when water levels drop and cave entrances become accessible. No permits needed for the public sections, but respect private land boundaries marked along the route. Primitive camping available at Duck River access points, and the limestone springs provide some of Tennessee’s cleanest drinking water.
