Saline Valley Warm Springs Dispersed Area
This legendary desert gathering spot sits in a remote valley between the Inyo Mountains and Death Valley, centered around three developed hot spring pools maintained by volunteers. The lower pool runs hottest at around 107°F, while the upper pools offer more moderate temperatures. Scattered camping spreads across the desert floor, with regulars claiming spots near the springs while newcomers set up further out. Expect a mix of hardcore desert rats, families, and curious first-timers, especially busy during winter months when the desert climate is perfect.
Access requires 27 miles of rough dirt roads from either Ubehebe Crater or Big Pine, with the Steele Pass route being slightly easier but still demanding high clearance. No services, no water except the springs themselves, no shade except what you bring. The volunteer caretakers maintain primitive composting toilets and a basic shower house, but this remains true boondocking. Winter and spring see the heaviest use when temperatures are manageable.
