Death Valley Eureka Valley Dunes Dispersed Area

The Eureka Valley Dunes sit isolated in Death Valley’s northern reaches, rising 680 feet from the valley floor — California’s tallest sand dunes. Dispersed camping spreads across the hardpan at the dunes’ base, with space for maybe 8-10 rigs on busy weekends. The dunes ‘sing’ when conditions are right, creating an otherworldly low hum that carries across the valley. No facilities, no shade, just you and some of the most pristine sand formations in the West.

Access requires 44 miles on South Eureka Road from Highway 168 — washboard dirt that beats up suspension and takes 90 minutes minimum. High-clearance essential; 4WD recommended after storms. Bone dry year-round, so pack every drop of water. Winter nights drop below freezing; summer days exceed 110°F. Peak season is March-April and October-November when temperatures stay reasonable.
