Ross Barnett Reservoir Spillway Backcountry Access Road

Access to Mississippi's largest reservoir backcountry

Moderate

The Ross Barnett Reservoir spillway backcountry access road threads through 32,000 acres of central Mississippi bottomland, where the Pearl River backs up behind the state’s largest earthen dam. This 22-mile network of maintenance roads follows the original surveyor’s routes from the 1960s dam construction, passing through mixed pine-hardwood forests and seasonal wetlands that flood during spring high water. The route crosses Pelahatchie Creek twice and climbs the spillway ridge for panoramic views across the reservoir toward Jackson’s skyline.

Moderate difficulty with seasonal flooding concerns and soft spots during wet weather. Any high-clearance vehicle can handle the route in dry conditions, but 4WD recommended during winter and spring months. The spillway authority maintains these roads for dam inspection access. Best visited October through March when water levels are down and mosquitoes manageable. Popular with bass fishermen accessing remote coves, but you’ll find solitude on weekdays. Dispersed camping allowed in designated areas with incredible sunrise views over Mississippi’s most productive fishery.
