Stillwater Reservoir Access Road

Gateway to Adirondack wilderness camping.

Moderate

The Stillwater Reservoir Access Road cuts 16 miles deep into the western Adirondacks through classic North Woods terrain that’s barely changed since the logging boom. This gravel and dirt track follows old logging railways through dense spruce-fir forests, crossing beaver ponds and rocky creek beds before reaching the massive 6,700-acre Stillwater Reservoir. The road gets progressively rougher as you head toward the dam, with washouts and loose rock sections that separate the prepared from the wishful.

Moderate difficulty with some technical spots requiring decent ground clearance and traction control. Any stock 4WD can handle it in good weather, but spring washouts and fall rains turn sections into muddy nightmares. Best tackled June through October when the bugs aren’t trying to carry you away. No permits needed, and there’s excellent dispersed camping along the reservoir shoreline with paddling access to the Five Ponds Wilderness. Fuel up in Old Forge — there’s nothing out here but loons and the occasional moose.
