Cutler Coast Bold Coast Trail Access Road
Technical approach to Maine's most dramatic sea cliffs
The Cutler Coast access road penetrates five miles inland from Route 191 to reach the Bold Coast Trail system and some of Maine’s most spectacular coastal cliffs. This rough track cuts through working blueberry fields and dense coastal forest before reaching the trailhead parking area near the clifftops. The final mile deteriorates to a rocky, rutted path that challenges even experienced drivers with its loose stones and steep grades approaching the 150-foot sea cliffs.
This is a difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD vehicles with good ground clearance and skid plates recommended for the final rocky approach. The road is passable April through November, but spring mud season can make it treacherous. No permits required, but the Maine Bureau of Parks manages the preserve. Dispersed camping is prohibited, but the nearby town of Cutler offers basic services. The payoff is world-class hiking access to Maine’s most remote and dramatic coastline, where bald eagles soar above pounding surf.
