Allagash Wilderness Waterway Tote Road
Gateway to Maine's most remote wilderness
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway Tote Road shadows Maine’s most celebrated canoe route for 43 miles from the Golden Road to Chamberlain Lake, passing through some of the most pristine wilderness left in the eastern United States. This rough dirt track was originally built to supply fire towers and remote camps, crossing Eagle Lake and threading between Round Pond Mountain and the Allagash River corridor. The road dead-ends at Chamberlain Lake, where remnants of the old tramway that once hauled logs between watersheds still rust in the forest.
Difficult rating demands high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings, deep mud holes, and sections where boulders and roots create technical challenges. Stock trucks struggle in wet conditions when clay turns to grease and water bars become axle-deep trenches. Best tackled June through September when road maintenance is minimal but conditions are driest. No permits required but expect Maine Warden Service checkpoints during hunting season. Carry recovery gear, spare tire, and extra fuel—it’s 50+ miles to services. The payoff is access to Maine’s most remote backcountry, with world-class brook trout fishing and camping spots that haven’t changed since the logging era ended.
