Germantown Greenline Railroad Grade Historic Route
Historic railroad grade through suburban Memphis
The old Illinois Central Railroad grade that once carried cotton and supplies through Confederate lines now serves as a pleasant overland route through suburban Memphis. This converted rail-trail runs from Shelby Farms Park east through Germantown and Collierville, following the original 1850s railroad bed that Union forces used during the Memphis Campaign. The route passes several preserved Civil War earthworks and the old Nonconnah Creek railroad bridge, now a pedestrian crossing.
This is pure scenic driving territory suitable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance. The crushed gravel surface stays firm year-round, making it perfect for stock SUVs or even higher-clearance cars. No permits required and multiple access points make it flexible for different trip lengths. While it lacks technical challenges, it’s a solid introduction to Memphis’s military history and offers easy camping access at Shelby Farms. Best during cooler months when the humidity isn’t crushing.
