Makgadikgadi Salt Pan Crossing

Cross the white void where ancient lakes once ruled

Moderate

The Makgadikgadi Pans stretch beyond the horizon like a frozen ocean, remnants of an ancient super-lake that once covered most of northern Botswana. This crossing takes you from Gweta village across Sua Pan, past the archaeological sites where Stone Age hunters once camped on these same shores, to Kubu Island where massive baobabs stand sentinel over the endless white. The route follows traditional salt-harvesting tracks used by generations of locals, across surfaces so flat and featureless that navigation becomes an exercise in pure faith in your GPS.

Moderate to difficult depending on seasonal conditions — the salt surface can be deceptively soft after rains, and getting stuck means a long, expensive recovery. Standard 4WD sufficient in dry season, but bring sand ladders and extra fuel. The pans flood January through April, making crossing impossible. Dry season (May-October) offers firm surface but scorching heat. No permits required, but inform authorities in Gweta and carry emergency communications. What you get is one of Africa’s most surreal landscapes and the silence that comes from being in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
