Nyika Plateau Highland Circuit

Africa's highland wilderness above the clouds

Moderate

At 8,000 feet above sea level, Nyika Plateau feels more like Scotland than Africa — until you spot zebra grazing on the rolling grasslands or hear the bark of a leopard echoing through the montane forests. This circuit winds through Malawi’s largest national park, connecting Chelinda Camp with remote ranger posts via tracks that cross flower-filled meadows and descend into forested valleys where elephant and buffalo leave their mark in the mud. The route passes Nganda Peak, the highest point in the park, and threads through stands of juniper and protea that exist nowhere else in Malawi.

Moderate difficulty with some technical rocky sections and steep climbs requiring low-range engagement. Any capable 4WD can handle the route, though a winch helps on the muddy forest tracks during rainy season. Best visited May through October when roads are passable and wildlife viewing peaks. Entry permits required at Thazima Gate — budget $50 per vehicle plus camping fees. Bring warm clothes; nights drop near freezing. What you get is Africa’s answer to alpine tundra, some of the continent’s best orchid displays, and camping under star-filled skies at altitude.
