Whangamoa Saddle Track
Nelson's backyard mountain climb with killer bay views
The Whangamoa Saddle Track cuts through the heart of the Bryant Range, climbing from sea level to 900 meters through dense native beech forest that hasn’t seen a chainsaw in decades. The track starts innocuously enough near Whangamoa village, but quickly turns into a proper mountain road with gradients that’ll have you wondering if your clutch will make it. The real payoff comes at Whangamoa Saddle itself, where the ridge opens up to show you Tasman Bay spread out below like a blue carpet, with Golden Bay visible on clear days.
This is a moderate track that demands high-clearance 4WD and decent ground clearance for the rocky sections. The track gets slippery when wet, and winter snow can close it entirely, so stick to October through April for best conditions. No permits required, and there’s decent dispersed camping near the saddle if you want to watch the sunrise over the bay. It’s a solid day trip from Nelson that shows you why the locals never shut up about their backyard mountains.
