Molesworth Station Road
High country station traverse
Molesworth Station Road is New Zealand’s ultimate high country experience — 180 kilometers of gravel and grass tracks across the country’s largest farm, where 10,000 cattle graze tussocklands bigger than some European countries. The route connects the Clarence Valley to the Wairau Valley via the Acheron and Molesworth Rivers, crossing the Richmond Range at 1350 meters elevation. Ward Pass and Wards Bridge are the key waypoints, with the latter crossing the Clarence River where gold miners once tried their luck in the 1860s.
Open only October through April when weather permits, this is moderate 4×4 country that rewards high-clearance vehicles but doesn’t demand lockers. Station gates lock at sunset — no exceptions — so plan your timing carefully and carry overnight gear if attempting the full traverse. No fuel, no shops, no cell service for 180km. The payoff is untouched New Zealand high country at its finest: golden grasslands rolling to snow-capped peaks, massive skies, and the kind of scale that puts modern life in perspective.
