Waipara Gorge to Omihi Track
Limestone country gold rush track through wine region
This forgotten gold rush route threads through North Canterbury’s limestone hills where Central Otago pinot noir vines now grow where sluice guns once carved terraces from hillsides. The track starts behind Waipara’s modern cellar doors but quickly deteriorates into a challenging 4WD route that climbs through Omihi saddle, past abandoned mine workings and limestone outcrops that’ll test your approach angles. The notorious Devil’s Punchbowl section — a steep limestone descent with loose rock — separates casual adventurers from serious four-wheelers.
This is a difficult technical route requiring genuine 4WD with low range, skid plates, and aggressive tires. The limestone can be slick when wet, making this a dry-weather-only proposition from November through March. No permits required, but much of the route crosses private farmland where gates must be left as found. Cell service is patchy at best. The reward is solitude in country where gold seekers walked 150 years ago, plus some of the best vineyard views in Canterbury when you finally drop into the Omihi Valley.
