Ust-Barguzin Village Well

Water Source

This stone-lined well dates back to the Soviet era when Ust-Barguzin served as a regional fishing hub on Lake Baikal’s eastern shore. The water runs cold and clear year-round, drawn from a deep aquifer that feeds the surrounding wetlands. Local residents still use it regularly, and it’s become an informal water source for the handful of overlanders who make it this far into the Barguzin Valley. A simple hand pump brings up about 5 gallons per minute.

The well sits near the village center, easily spotted by its distinctive wooden shelter. Access requires navigating several kilometers of rough track from the main Barguzin road. Village locals are generally welcoming but expect basic courtesy — this is their primary water source during dry spells.
