Baikal Ice Road Olkhon Island Natural Harbor
This dramatic cliff-side promontory offers one of Siberia’s most iconic views: the sacred Shamanka Rock jutting into the world’s deepest lake. During winter, the frozen Baikal becomes a highway, allowing direct access across the ice to this spiritual center of Buryat shamanism. The views stretch endlessly across the lake’s frozen expanse toward the distant Barguzin Mountains.
The ice road typically opens in February and closes by early April when the thaw begins. Local Buryat guides offer traditional ceremonies here, and the area can get crowded during Russian holidays. Summer access requires the ferry from Sakhyurta, but winter overlanders can drive directly across the lake ice.
