Baikal Seal Observatory Point

Point of Interest

This weathered research platform juts out over Lake Baikal’s pristine waters, offering one of the few places where travelers can reliably spot the endemic Baikal seal. Built by Soviet marine biologists in the 1970s, the concrete observation deck provides unobstructed views across the lake’s eastern basin. Early morning and evening offer the best seal sightings, with researchers often present during summer months to conduct population counts.

Reached via a rough 8-kilometer track from the main Baikal coastal road, passable only in dry conditions. The platform itself is stable but shows decades of harsh Siberian weather. No facilities beyond the observation deck, but the site offers spectacular sunrise views and serves as a launching point for hiking deeper into the Barguzin Ridge backcountry.
