Barguzin Nature Reserve Research Station
Russia’s first nature reserve headquarters sits on Baikal’s northeastern shore, housing researchers studying the endemic Barguzin sable. The wooden buildings blend Soviet-era functionality with pre-revolutionary design, surrounded by old-growth taiga. Scientists occasionally allow overlanders to camp nearby in exchange for supply runs or assistance with field work.
Access via rough logging roads from the Barguzin Ridge trails requires high clearance. The station operates year-round but is most accessible May through October. Bring provisions—the nearest supplies are 80 kilometers away in Ust-Barguzin.
