Taklamakan Desert Southern Rim Road

Silk Road edge of the world's second largest desert

Moderate

The G315 highway traces what Marco Polo called the most dangerous section of the Silk Road, hugging the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert where entire cities lie buried beneath shifting sand dunes. Starting from Kashgar, this route passes through ancient oasis settlements like Yarkand and Hotan, where jade traders still work the same riverbanks their ancestors mined 2,000 years ago. The road parallels the Kunlun Mountains, offering glimpses of 23,000-foot peaks rising beyond endless sand seas, while archaeological sites like Niya and Rawak reveal Buddhist temples and Greco-Roman statuary emerging from the dunes.

Moderate difficulty requires careful planning around sandstorms and extreme temperatures that swing 60°F between day and night. Any reliable vehicle works, but carry extra fuel, water for a week, and sand recovery gear. Summer temperatures exceed 120°F while winter brings bitter cold and potential snow at higher elevations near the mountains. Travel April-May or September-October for bearable conditions. Permits are required for some archaeological areas, and photography restrictions apply in sensitive regions. This drive offers a haunting journey through one of history’s great crossroads, where you’ll camp beside ruins that once housed Buddhist monks and Sogdian merchants.
