Ojos Negros to Mike’s Sky Rancho Route

The dirt road from Ojos Negros to Mike’s Sky Rancho climbs through one of Baja’s most surprising landscapes — pine forests and mountain meadows that’ll make you forget you’re in the desert. This 40-mile route follows old logging roads and ranching tracks up into the Sierra de Juárez, crossing Arroyo Mike multiple times as you wind through granite boulders and stands of Jeffrey pine. The real test comes at Kilometer 55 where the trail drops into a rocky arroyo crossing that can flood during winter storms.

Moderate difficulty with a few technical sections requiring high clearance and 4WD for the creek crossings. Stock vehicles can make it during dry conditions, but recovery gear is smart for the steep rocky sections. Best tackled April through October when the high country is accessible. No permits needed, but bring extra water and fuel — Mike’s Sky Rancho is the only reliable resupply for 100 miles. The payoff is camping under pines at 6,000 feet with views clear to the Pacific.
