MacDonnell Ranges Telegraph Station Ruins
These weathered stone walls mark one of the remotest telegraph stations on the old Overland Telegraph Line, built in 1872 and abandoned when the line was rerouted in 1929. The ruins sit in a narrow gorge surrounded by red quartzite cliffs, with a permanent spring that kept the station operators alive for decades. Foundation walls, chimney, and parts of the old battery room remain intact.
Access is via a rough 4WD track that branches south from Larapinta Drive about 15km west of Standley Chasm. Track gets very rocky in the final 2km and is impassable when wet. No facilities, no signage — just the ruins and a sense of what isolation meant to telegraph operators 150 years ago.
