Volcano Route – Nevado de Toluca

Drive to 15,000 feet in an extinct volcano crater

Expert

The Nevado de Toluca road climbs 4,600 feet in 12 miles to reach 15,016 feet elevation — the highest you can drive in Mexico. This extinct stratovolcano cradles two alpine lakes, Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna, in its massive crater. The route passes through four distinct climate zones, from pine forests to alpine tundra where only the hardiest plants survive. Above treeline, the rocky switchbacks demand respect — one wrong move sends you tumbling thousands of feet down volcanic scree.

This is expert-level due to altitude, exposure, and rapidly changing weather. High-clearance 4WD essential, along with warm clothes even in summer. Altitude sickness hits hard above 12,000 feet — know the signs. Winter brings snow and ice making the route impassable. No permits required but check conditions with park rangers in Toluca. Best attempted May through October. You’ll stand at the roof of Mexico with views stretching to both oceans on clear days, plus crater lakes that freeze solid in winter.
