Binns Track
Victoria's most challenging alpine 4WD test
The Binns Track carved its reputation among Victoria’s alpine peaks where gold fever once drove men to haul machinery up impossible grades to places like Speculation and Omeo. This 40-kilometer beast climbs from Omeo through the Tambo Valley, crosses exposed ridgelines where snow can appear any month, and drops into technical creek crossings that have bent more than a few diff housings. The notorious Blue Rag Range section will test your nerve and your vehicle’s articulation over loose rock steps and off-camber sidling tracks.
This is expert-level terrain demanding modified 4WDs with low-range, diff locks, and rock sliders minimum. Summer only—winter brings killing cold and impassable snow. Carry recovery gear, first aid, and sat communication; you’re hours from help when things go wrong. But nail this track and you’ve earned serious bragging rights. The alpine views from Blue Rag summit stretch to the coast, abandoned mine shafts tell stories of fortunes won and lost, and you’ll understand why this track separates weekend warriors from genuine high-country drivers.
