Fagaras Mountains Transfagarasan Extension
Communist quarry roads to Romania's highest peaks
Beyond the tourist traffic on Ceaușescu’s famous Transfagarasan highway, forgotten quarry access roads climb toward the actual Fagaras ridgeline through forests of spruce and beech. These tracks, built in the 1970s to service limestone quarries and later used for military installations, wind past Balea Glacial Lake toward the Moldoveanu Peak area. The route passes abandoned concrete bunkers from Romania’s paranoid Communist era and reaches Capra Lake, where seasonal shepherd camps dot the alpine meadows at 2,200 meters elevation.
Difficult terrain requires capable 4WD with low-range and skid plates — the quarry roads deteriorate to boulder fields above the treeline. June through September only, as high altitude snow closes the extensions most of the year. No permits required but inform mountain rescue in Curtea de Argeș of your plans. Dispersed camping allowed above 1,000 meters. The payoff is access to Romania’s highest peaks without the crowds, plus incredible views south toward Wallachia from ridges that Communist border guards once patrolled.
