Via Alpina Military Road Circuit
WWI fortress roads through the Austrian Dolomites
These ghost roads were carved by Austrian engineers between 1915-1918 to supply mountain fortresses along the Italian front, and they remain some of Europe’s most spectacular high-altitude tracks. The circuit connects Passo Valparola, Lagazuoi, and the Cinque Torri via exposed ledges that cling to vertical dolomite walls at 2,200 meters. Concrete bunkers and rusted artillery positions mark every switchback—grim reminders that men died building these impossible routes through rock and ice.
Moderate difficulty with extreme exposure—one mistake means a 500-meter tumble into the valley. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle the surfaces fine, but nerves of steel are mandatory. Open June through October only; snow closes these heights eight months a year. No permits needed, but bring chains and emergency gear regardless of season. The views into Austria’s Ötztal and Italy’s Veneto are worth every white-knuckle moment, and scattered rifugios provide mountain meals between the technical sections.
