Pindus Mountains Shepherd’s Road Circuit

Ancient shepherd paths through Greece's spine

Difficult

This network of stone-paved kalderimi (cobbled paths) and dirt tracks follows traditional shepherd routes through the Pindus range, connecting isolated Vlach villages like Samarina and Perivoli. The circuit climbs from oak forests through beech groves to alpine meadows where shepherds still drive flocks to summer pastures. Stone bridges cross mountain torrents, and the route passes abandoned medieval monasteries carved into cliffsides. The most challenging section climbs the flanks of Mount Smolikas (2,637m), Greece’s second-highest peak, on tracks originally built by Italian engineers during WWII occupation.

Difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD and experience with narrow mountain roads — some sections barely one vehicle wide with no passing spots for kilometers. Cobblestone sections can be treacherous when wet. Best tackled May through October when high passes are snow-free. Fuel and supplies available in Konitsa and Grevena; carry extra water and food. Wild camping allowed above treeline. This is Greece beyond the postcards — a chance to experience the country’s mountainous backbone where traditions unchanged since Byzantine times still govern the rhythm of life.
