Mounds State Park Ancient Earthworks
Mounds State Park preserves ten earthen mounds constructed by the Adena people between 160 BC and 200 AD. The Great Mound, a circular earthwork 384 feet in diameter, dominates the site and aligns with lunar cycles. A network of trails connects the various mounds through mature hardwood forest along the White River. The park sees steady educational tourism but remains relatively quiet outside school group seasons.
Located just off I-69 near Anderson, the park provides easy access to central Indiana’s trail networks. The earthworks are accessible year-round, though interpretive programs run primarily spring through fall. Parking is paved and adequate for larger vehicles, with restrooms and water available at the visitor center.
