Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo Ridge Track – Portugal
Volcanic ridge crawling above the Atlantic clouds
This maintenance track follows the spine of Madeira’s central mountain range, connecting the island’s two highest peaks via a network of levada service roads and goat paths that most tourists never see. Starting from the Pico do Areeiro summit road at 1,818 meters, the route threads through volcanic tunnels carved for irrigation channels, crosses knife-edge ridges where Atlantic clouds boil up from both sides, and ends at Pico Ruivo’s 1,862-meter summit. The track passes through three distinct climate zones in 15 kilometers, from alpine desert to cloud forest.
This is expert-level terrain requiring heavily modified 4WDs with extreme articulation – think Portuguese Rubicon Trail with 1,000-meter cliff drops. Open year-round but best attempted April through October when clouds are less persistent. No permits but notify local authorities of your route. The track includes several technical rock crawls and exposure that will test both driver nerve and vehicle capability. Wild camping is prohibited on Madeira, but the route can be completed as a challenging day run. This is one of Europe’s most technically demanding coastal mountain routes.
