Iceland Ring Road F-Roads Circuit – Iceland
Highland desert crossing through volcanic wasteland
The F-roads of Iceland’s interior slice through landscapes that look like Mars with a weather problem. F35 Kjölur route runs 170 kilometers between Gullfoss and Akureyri, crossing the highland desert between Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, while F26 Sprengisandur covers 200 kilometers from Goðafoss to the southern highlands. These routes ford unbridged glacial rivers like Þjórsá and pass active geothermal areas where steam vents remind you this island is still being born.
This is serious 4×4 territory requiring modified vehicles with snorkels, recovery gear, and multiple spare tires. River crossings can be waist-deep and change daily with glacial melt. Only passable June through September, with July-August being prime season. No permits needed but inform Icelandic search and rescue of your route. Fuel stations are 200+ kilometers apart in the interior. Wild camping is legal and necessary – bring cold-weather gear even in summer. This is Iceland’s version of crossing the Empty Quarter, where mechanical failure means helicopter rescue.
