Strada dell’Assietta – Italy
Alpine military road at the edge of the sky
The Strada dell’Assietta cuts a knife-edge line across the spine of the Cottian Alps, following an old military road built by the Savoy army in the 18th century. This 35-kilometer route connects Sestriere to the Colle dell’Assietta at 2,472 meters, with sections that drop off into France on one side and Italy on the other. The road passes Fort Assietta, where Piedmontese forces held off French attacks in 1747, and offers unobstructed views across the Western Alps to Mont Blanc.
Rated moderate to difficult depending on conditions, this route demands high-clearance vehicles with solid traction control due to loose rock sections and exposed switchbacks. Open July through September when snow clears, the road can turn treacherous in fog or afternoon thunderstorms. No permits required, but fuel up in Sestriere and carry extra water. Wild camping is possible at designated areas near the pass. This is pure Alpine overlanding – thin air, big views, and the kind of terrain that separates weekend warriors from serious mountain drivers.
